Pendleton South Carolina

Pendleton is located in Anderson County in Upstate South Carolina. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 2966. It is sister city with Stornoway, Scotland. It occupies 3.6 square miles.

Cherokee Indians lived in this region long before the American Revolution.  It was the Cherokee's choice to side with Great Britain during the war for independence, which led to the loss of their land in what is now the northwest corner of South Carolina. Two months of fighting in the summer of 1776 between the Patriot militia and the Cherokees, aided by Loyalists, brought Indian defeat. By 1789 this region became Pendleton County, later named Pendleton District. Today that area is Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.

Pendleton was named for Judge Henry Pendleton, a jurist, legislator and soldier from Virginia. Pendleton was founded in 1790, many years prior to the founding of either Anderson County or Pickens County. Pendleton was the original courthouse seat for the Pendleton District, which served the areas that are now Anderson and Pickens Counties.

The Pendleton Historic Distric was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1970. Historic buildings on the Pendleton town square include Farmer's Hall and Hunter's Store. Near Pendleton are the historic plantation homes Ashtabula and Woodburn.

Pendleton is a wonderful town with many historic buildings and a location that is convenient to Anderson and Clemson. It is only 30 miles from Greenville making it an ideal bedroom community for people wanting to live in a quiet small town but work in a large city.
