Lake Keowee South Carolina
Lake Keowee is located predominately in Oconee County in Upstate South Carolina, but it also extends into Pickens County. Lake Keowee is a reservoir created by Keowee Dam and Little River Dam. It impounds the Keowee River and the Little River, each of which exits through its respective dam. The two rivers join just below the dams and their confluence forms the Seneca River, a tributary of the Savannah River. Lake Keowee was constructed by Duke Power Company to generate hydroelectric power. Keowee also serves as a source of drinking water for Greenville and Seneca.
Lake Keowee covers Keowee Town, site of the capital of the Lower Cherokee Nation. Keowee, meaning "Place of the Mulberries," was visited by Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto when he came through the area in 1540.
18,500 acres of water and a 300-mile shoreline make the Lake Keowee area a popular place for boating, fishing, water-skiing, swimming, camping and picnicking. Keowee's water tempature can be puzzling. The temperature changes from cold to warm depending on where you are. It depth averages 54 ft but can exceed 150 ft. The cold water comes from 350-foot-deep Lake Jocassee. But the warm water comes from Oconee Nuclear Station, which cools its reactors with the lake, and send heated water back into Keowee.
Second-home buyers are flocking to Keowee's shores, with the local population quadrupling since the lake's formation 30 years ago. It is a great place to retire of raise a family. There's nothing puzzling about the attraction of the crystal clear water and peaceful beauty of living at the base of the beautiful Blue Ridge foothills. The Lake Keowee area of South Carolina has a mild four season climate which allows for outdoor activities to be enjoyed year round.
Lake Keowee is about 2 hours from both Atlanta or Charlotte and about 1 hour from Greenville. It is very close to Clemson University with all of its amenities, sporting events, and lifelong learning opportunities. The closest airport is GSP in Greenville.
Keowee is known for the state record yellow perch, and it also has excellent largemouth, smallmouth, crappie and catfish opportunities.
