Hartwell Lake South Carolina
Hartwell Dam was created by the US Army Corps of Engineers under the Flood Control Act of 1950 which created Hartwell Lake. Hartwell Lake is about 2 hours from Atlanta or Charlotte, and 45 minutes from Greenville. It is one of the southeast's largest and most popular public recreation lakes. It was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 as part of a flood control, hydropower, and navigation project. Authorized purposes now include recreation, water quality, water supply, and fish and wildlife management. Each year, millions of people utilize the many public parks, marinas, and campgrounds conveniently located around the lake to pursue a variety of outdoor recreational experiences thus making Hartwell Lake one of the most visited Corps lakes in the nation.

Lake Hartwell maintains a reputation for top-flight angling, including for striped and hybrid bass, largemouth, crappie, bream and catfish. While bream and crappie are the most prevalent, the big timers look for the striped bass. When choosing a lure, go with pearl or natural colors. Hartwell is a clear lake and these colors will show best to fish. Use medium diving lures if you are after bass. Don't be afraid to fish around the docks. A lot of bigger bass as well as the crappie and bream hang out there. you can try using live bait such as crickets. The bream, especially the shellcrackers, will love it.
