Clemson is a city located in Pickens county in Upstate South Carolina. The population was 11,939 at the 2000 census and center of an urban cluster with a total population of 42,199. It is best known as the home of Clemson University. According to the US Census Bureau, the city is 7.8 square miles total.

The city of Clemson's character is largely defined by Clemson University, a large public university that dates to 1889. The university is the cultural center of the city even though a small 2-block downtown is located directly to the north of the campus. Clemson is a small college town and has some really nice restuarants. Traffic on game day can be bad so it is best to avoid it unless you are going to enjoy some tailgating and football!
Long ago, wealthy plantation owners and notable statesmen from across South Carolina began building second homes in the Upstate to take advantage of the moderate summer climate. John C. Calhoun, former Vice President of the United States, was among those who built a home in the area. As a tribute to this great statesman, the town was originally named Calhoun, and the university bears the name of Calhoun's son-in-law, Thomas Green Clemson, who purchased the plantation and later deeded it to the state of South Carolina to establish a college.
